While we wait for some of our favorite tv shows to come back (Stranger Things, anyone?) there are plenty of other shows to check out! Check back weekly for more recommendations.
It’s no secret that there is some worry behind the WGA strike and what that means for our favorite tv shows. But instead of worrying, here are a few picks to keep you busy while we wait!
1. Daisy Jones & The Six
It’s dark and glamorous and heartfelt, with a killer soundtrack and a companion album that the cast recorded. Riley Keough stars as the titular Daisy Jones and Sam Claflin as the Six frontman Billy Dunne, and we can say they bless our screens with some serious chemistry. Based on the book by Taylor Jenkins Reid (which was loosely based on the breakups of The Civil Wars and Fleetwood Mac) it’s a story about music, passion, self destruction, and the family we create through it all. And fun fact, the actors all learned to sing and play their own instruments for the show! It’s rumored that there might even be a Daisy Jones tour in the works. Watch it on Amazon Prime.
2. Ted Lasso
Has there ever been a more wholesome and heartfelt tv show than Ted Lasso? Probably not. The show focuses on titular character Ted Lasso, played by Jason Sudeikis, a football coach from Kansas who takes a job as the manager of a soccer team (yes, yes, we know you Brits call it football) in England as he copes with the changes that have rocked his family. It’s a show full of hilarious puns, heartfelt scenes, and truly some of the best character development out there. The third and final season is currently airing on Apple+.
3. Black Sails
Are pirates your thing? What about stories driven by fantastic storytelling, incredible action scenes, and queer representation? Black Sails is a prequel to “Treasure Island” by Robert Louis Stevenson, focusing on the adventures of Captain Flint, played by Toby Stephens. The acting is top notch and the costumes are to die for. Black Sails ran for four seasons and you can watch it now on Starz.
4. Peaky Blinders
If you haven’t watched this star-studded epic based on the low beginnings of Birmingham gangster Tommy Shelby, played by the incredible Cillian Murphy, then it’s about time you did – by order of the Peaky Blinders. Each season is more insane and intense than the last, and while the first will always be my favorite, the stories that come to the forefront of each arc are all about family, power, and what we’re willing to do to stay on top. Peaky Blinders ran for five seasons and you can catch them all on Netflix.
5. Avatar The Last Airbender
If you’re looking for one of the best animated tv shows of all time, look no further than ATLA. Most people would say this three season show ended entirely too soon, but somehow they managed to cram in some of the most incredible character development and emotional storytelling into those half hour episodes. The show follows Aang, the last airbender and the next Avatar, as he realizes that he’s been frozen in ice for nearly 100 years. From there he joins up with Southern Water Tribe siblings Sokka and Katara, a waterbender, and earthbender Toph, for a series of adventures that leads to him saving the world. And Zuko’s redemption arc? Brings me to tears every time. Watch it on Netflix and keep an eye out for news on the live action remake.
