Bad news for the avid watchers of the Emmy Awards, it has been postponed! That’s right, the 2023 Emmy Awards is the first awards show affected by the actors’ and writers’ strikes.
The 2023 Emmy Awards was set for September, however, two days after unveilling the nominees for the ceremony, the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) joined the picket lines of the Writer’s Guild of America (WGA.)
The Story Behind the Strikes and Emmy Awards
According to news, the SAG-AFTRA was negotiating with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) for updated contracts with stipulations including the widely debated use of Artificial Intelligence for shows. However, the negotiations fell through and the SAG-AFTRA had no choice but to join the strikes.
SAG-AFTRA’s website says this about the negotiation, “SAG-AFTRA negotiated in good faith with the AMPTP. We said we need a modern contract that addresses modern issues,” “Our careers as performers are now in jeopardy. This is why we’re striking.”
Now, because the members of the SAG-AFTRA are the same people that populate and win the Emmy Awards, organizers have announced that it will be postponed, with no definite news on when it will happen. A large chunk of the workforce behind television shows honored in the Emmys are also members of the SAG-AFTRA, and as such, they chose to not attend any awards ceremony, or participate in any new shows, until their voices are heard.
The AMPTP had something to say about the strikes, though, “A strike is certainly not the outcome we hoped for as studios cannot operate without the performers that bring our TV shows and films to life,” “The Union has regrettably chosen a path that will lead to financial hardship for countless thousands of people who depend on the industry.”
However, despite the AMPTP’s statement, the strikes are not budging. It is heartbreaking that the crew and actors for our favorite shows will be missing the awarding ceremony meant to recognize their work, thankfully, the Television Academy seemed to take them into consideration.
It’s a shame that the Emmy Awards will happen as planned, but just in case you want to know the nominees, we will tell you. Succession has the most nominations for up to 27 awards. Other notable shows include, Andor, The Last of Us, Better Call Saul, The Crown, The White Lotus, and Yellowjackets.
The Emmy Awards is one of the top ceremonies watched by people all over the world. It is the most watched aside from the Oscars and the Golden Globes. This year’s awarding ceremony doesn’t have a definite date yet, so let’s wait and watch out for further announcement.
