Prince Harry has returned to the exciting world of polo, not just for the sport, but for a wonderful cause. He took part in a special event called the Sentebale Polo Cup, held annually to help kids and young people in southern Africa who are facing tough challenges like poverty, inequality, and illnesses like HIV/AIDS and COVID-19.
The Duke of Sussex co-started a charitable foundation called Sentebale back in 2006. This foundation has done a lot to help these kids and young people, and the polo match is a big part of raising money for this important work. Over the years, this special horse-riding event has managed to collect more than $14 million to support Sentebale.
This time, the match happened at the Singapore Polo Club. Prince Harry wasn’t alone on the field. He played alongside his good friend Ignacio “Nacho” Figueras, who is also a supporter of Sentebale. On the field, they led different teams, with Nacho captaining the Singapore Polo Club Team and Harry leading the Royal Salute Sentebale Team.
Both Harry and Nacho showed off their skills by scoring impressive goals for their teams. The match ended in a tie, with a final score of 7-7. The exciting match was followed by a dinner at the InterContinental Singapore Hotel.
In a message shared by Sentebale, Prince Harry spoke about the foundation’s important work and how it’s a tribute to his late mother, Princess Diana. He praised the foundation for being a strong support for communities in southern Africa for nearly 20 years. He said that the ability to adapt and change has been crucial for their success since he and his friend Prince Seeiso started the charity 17 years ago.
Prince Harry also said that their work is all about making sure kids and young people in southern Africa have a good future. They want these young people to be strong, healthy, and able to chase after their dreams. This mission is a way of honoring their late mothers’ legacies as well.
“Our work has remained rooted in our mission, and in honour of our late mothers, we wish to ensure all children and young people in southern Africa are empowered, healthy and able to pursue their ambitions and dreams,” the royal said in the statement.
