In 2014, husband and wife Mike and Vicki Nelson decided to buy a closed pizza place with all the equipment included.
The couple chose to start their own business after going through some rough patches.
Mike and Vicki first met while camping in New York. They were married in 1991, and Mike worked at an army reserve for over a decade. After leaving the service, he started his own snow removal business, which he later sold with the stipulation that he and Vicki continue working for it. But the snow removal business went under, which left Mike without a job.
Their family braved the hard times until they both returned to their roots of growing up in the kitchen. Mike thought of his childhood, growing up in New York with the signature thin-crust pizza and Italian flavors. Vicki also remembered her childhood, especially her Grandma Berinato’s recipe and her grandpa’s nickname, which they named their pizzeria after.
With the help of their brother Louis and his son, Steven, on the recipes, they opened Little Pops NY Pizzeria in Naperville. Since opening the restaurant, it has been an open secret for everyone craving a good old New York pizza.
Unlike the deep-dish pizza that Chicago is famous for, New York-style pizzas served at Little Pops are thin-crusted, with marinara sauce and cheese on top and a choice of toppings like pepperoni. And to cater to different customers, Little Pops also have vegan and vegetarian options for their pizzas.
