Angela Bassett has won her first Emmy!
At 66, the acclaimed actress, with nine previous Emmy nominations, finally took home the award for best narrator at the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys on September 7. This award recognized her exceptional work on Queens, a National Geographic docuseries exploring matriarchies in nature.
Bassett was visibly emotional while accepting the prestigious award. Approaching the microphone, she exclaimed, “Oh my God. Wow. My first Emmy!”
The audience erupted in applause as the Black Panther star continued, “It feels good … really, really good.”
She then expressed her gratitude to “National Geographic, Wildstar Films, and all the directors—every single one a woman—who brought this incredible story to life. This docuseries highlights the fierce and magnificent aspects of the animal kingdom.”
Bassett conveyed her excitement and appreciation, saying, “I couldn’t be more thrilled and more grateful. Thank you, each and every one of you.”
The American Horror Story actress shared her thoughts on this significant achievement, which follows her recent acceptance of an honorary Oscar for her contributions to film. In the press room and on social media, she discussed her surprise at winning such a major award.
When asked why she seemed surprised despite her impressive career, Bassett explained, “This is one of the really, really big ones, you know what I mean? And so that … that doesn’t usually happen.” She added, “But also, whenever you’re acknowledged … I’m just a girl who wanted to act. My mentors were ahead of me. I looked to them for inspiration and hope. I focused my energy and love to make it happen for my life.”
She further reflected, “Every day, I try to remember that first love. When something like this—my Emmy win—happens, I truly appreciate it.”
On Instagram, after her win, Bassett shared her astonishment and gratitude in a heartfelt post. “My very first #Emmy. It feels really good to hold this in my hands,” she wrote. She thanked the Television Academy for honoring her and the Queens docuseries.
Regarding the docuseries’ content, Bassett noted, “So much of my life involves telling stories on camera. When I get the chance to step back and let these majestic, powerful creatures take center stage, I am honored to be their voice.”
She concluded, “Thank you to @natgeotv, @Wildstarfilms, and the incredible directors, ALL WOMEN, who brought QUEENS to life. I share this award with you.”
