According to People, Avril Lavigne and Mod Sun split up almost a year after they revealed their engagement.
A publication’s insider said that they made it officially over after the two’s relationship had been shaky for the past two months. Mod Sun representative told Billboard on Tuesday (Feb. 21),
Billboard has also contacted Lavigne’s representatives for clarification. Mod Sun and Lavigne’s relationship is still unclear because neither has addressed it openly to the public.
The Pop Punk Queen Lavigne, now 38, was last seen with Sun at a pre-Grammy party in Los Angeles honoring Julie Greenwald and Craig Kallman.
This week, TMZ released pictures of the “Girlfriend” singer and songwriter hugging rapper Tyga after dinner at the Nobu restaurant. The photos spurred rumors of a romantic relationship between the two artists. However, an insider notifies the PEOPLE that Avril and Tyga are just peers. Absolutely no third party was involved in the separation.
According to a statement provided to PEOPLE by a Mod Sun representative three days ago, they were still engaged and living together before Mod departed for the tour. If anything has altered since then, it is news to him. Tonight, Mod will be playing at The Hawthorne Theater in Portland.
Neither Avril nor her representative has addressed the situation.
Lavigne and Mod Sun, whose actual name is Derek Smith, met in January 2021 and released “Flames” as a collaborative single in the same month. They began dating the following month, in March 2022, and became engaged in April that year.
Both singers went on to date after Machine Gun Kelly met them through the song “Flames,” featured on Mod Sun’s record Internet Killed the Rocker.
Smith said to Metro in February 2021 about Lavigne that they linked up through just making small talk about music.
Recent releases from the Minnesota-born band God Save the Teen include the single “Avril’s Song” and the duet “Shelter,” which features the singer’s ex-partner.
According to an interview Mod Sun gave to E! News, the song “Avril’s Song” is “dark and sweet at the same time,” and the lyrics are “a total metaphor” for the impact their relationship has had on him.
After Mod Sun recently raved about his fiancée in a confidential conversation, their separation will shock fans.
This month, he told E! News Francesca Amiker that he discovered such a companion in this world to go through the turmoil that life brings him. Additionally, he said that being with a mature woman who has been there and done that ten times over has made him better as an individual.
Moreover, he featured Lavigne on his latest single, “Shelter,” about finding someone who will become your shelter as you go through life together.
From 2006 to 2010, Lavigne was married to Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley before dating Mod Sun. She married Nickelback’s lead singer Chad Kroeger in 2011, but they divorced three years later in 2015.
Previously, Mod Sun was linked with Tana Mongeau and Bella Thorne.
