On Tuesday, the “Barbie” movie achieved a pretty incredible milestone – surpassing $537 million in earnings and snagging its position as Warner Bros. highest-grossing domestic film in its century-long history. This achievement booted the previous record held by Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight,” which had raked in $536 million in 2008.
It is the second-biggest Warner Bros. release in history – behind the final Harry Potter film, which grossed $1.34 billion globally.
The captivating and quirky collaboration between filmmaker Greta Gerwig, Mattel, and Warner Bros., characterized by its bubblegum pink aesthetic, has impressively brought in over $1.2 billion in global box office revenue since its release on July 21.
This accomplishment marks a feat for the recently formed Warner Bros. Discovery (the new name resulting from the merger between Warner Media and Discovery in 2022). Moreover, it stands as the second film of 2023 to join the billion-dollar club, with Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” having achieved a surprising $1.3 billion since its debut in April.
The film also achieved the honors of having the largest debut ever for a movie directed by a woman, surpassing the previous record held by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s 2019 blockbuster “Captain Marvel,” which had earned a $153 million debut.
Margot Robbie, who skillfully and joyfully portrays the quintessential portrayal of Barbie in the film, is enjoying substantial rewards for her pivotal role in bringing the iconic character to life on the silver screen and on the red carpet. As both the star and producer of the season’s most significant success story, she is set to earn an estimated $50 million in combined earnings from her salary and share of the box office revenue, as previously reported by Variety. Greta Gerwig, the filmmaker behind the project, is also poised to receive substantial bonuses due to the runaway triumph of the film.
