The House of Cards alum was facing nine separate charges, include sexual assault. The crimes were said to have involved four different men and to have been committed between 2001 and 2013, when Kevin Spacey served as artistic director at the Old Vic theater in London.
The actor pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Justice Mark Wall had sent the jury out to render its verdicts on Monday at 12.45 p.m. local time after hearing four weeks of testimony. After over 12 hours of deliberation, the jury elected to acquit Spacey of seven counts of sexual assault. He was also acquitted of one count of one count of causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent and causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent.
All four of the alleged victims, who, under UK law, can’t be named at this time, testified to their alleged gropings during the trial. Spacey testified on his own behalf as well.
Superstar Elton John and his husband, David Furnish, also appeared on behalf of the defense, via video call. He spoke about a party where one of the plaintiffs accused Kevin Spacey of groping him, and verified that Spacey had never attended the party he was alleged to have been at.
In their testimony, the four men described Spacey as a “sexual bully.” The acts they testified about ranged from unwanted touching and harassing comments, to aggressive crotch-grabbing and, in one instance, performing oral sex on an unconscious man. Prosecutors argued that Spacey was allowed to get away with this behavior because of his status as a well-known celebrity.
Spacey was fired from the mega-hit show, House of Cards, after he was accused of sexual misconduct by fellow actor Anthony Rapp. He was found not guilty in that case in a Massechuesets court.
Today is Spacey’s 64th birthday.
