The acclaimed series Peaky Blinders concluded in 2022, yet fans will soon revisit Tommy Shelby’s world in an exciting new film.
Steven Knight, the show’s creator, set the drama in post-World War I Birmingham, England. The story centered on the Shelby family, who dominated the city’s illegal betting and bootlegging trades.
The series spanned six seasons, featuring Cillian Murphy as the lead, Tommy Shelby. Other notable cast members included Helen McCrory, Paul Anderson, Sophie Rundle, Finn Cole, Tom Hardy, and Anya Taylor-Joy.
The Peaky Blinders movie is now in the works. Knight revealed to Variety in 2021 that the film was in “development,” explaining, “It’s a fully formed idea with a beginning, middle, and end. It will be a fitting conclusion to the story so far.”
In March 2024, Knight shared an exciting update with Birmingham World, stating that filming would start in September. Netflix confirmed the movie’s progress in June, posting a photo of the script on X (formerly Twitter).

Aside from creating Peaky Blinders, Knight is known for the game show Who Wants to be a Millionaire, the biopic Spencer, and the Netflix series All the Light We Cannot See.
Despite his busy schedule, Knight is committed to the Peaky Blinders movie. In 2022, he told Heart Breakfast that he was nearly finished with the script, stating, “I’m almost done writing it, and we’re going to shoot it. I’m setting up some film and television studios in Digbeth, Birmingham.”
That year, Knight and the cast discussed the series’ history with Esquire. Knight mentioned that new cast members from season 6 would be crucial to the film’s plot, saying, “In series six, we introduced a new generation, and they will play a role in the film. It’s about finding actors who represent the future.”
In 2023, Knight told Radio Times that the film is set during World War II and advised audiences to “expect the unexpected.” He later mentioned he was “just working on the final bits” and planned to start filming in mid-2024. His timeline seems accurate, as he confirmed to Birmingham World in March 2024 that filming would begin in September in Digbeth.
Cillian Murphy Will Definitely Return as Tommy Shelby.
Since the series ended, Cillian Murphy has spoken about returning to his iconic role, but only if it feels right. He told Rolling Stone in May 2023, “If there’s more story, I’d love to do it. But it has to feel right.” He praised the final series and emphasized that any new project must be legitimate and justified.
In July 2023, Murphy reiterated his interest, saying, “That’s probably the worst thing about Peaky Blinders – being asked about the movie all the time!” He expressed enthusiasm for a movie if there’s more to tell, though he had no updates at the time.
In March 2024, Knight confirmed that Murphy would “definitely” return for the film. Netflix also shared a quote from Murphy on X, where he expressed his excitement about collaborating with Knight and Tom Harper again. “Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me… I’m excited for fans,” he said.

Sophie Rundle, who played Ada Thorne, Tommy’s sister, was asked about the movie while filming Netflix’s The Diplomat. She responded, “I have not heard anything. Actors are genuinely the last to know. There are rumors, but fans will generate the appetite.”
Sam Claflin Would Love to Revisit Oswald Mosley.
Sam Claflin, who joined in season 5 as Oswald Mosley, a main antagonist, expressed interest in returning. On Watch What Happens Live in 2023, Claflin said, “I don’t know much, but I’d love to revisit that character. That’s all I can say.”
Kate Phillips Would Be “Thrilled” to Join.
Kate Phillips, who played Linda Shelby, Tommy’s brother Arthur’s ex-wife, expressed excitement about the film. In 2022, she called the series finale “stunning and surprising” and said she’d be “thrilled” to return if Knight includes Linda in the movie.

While many original cast members will return, Knight is also introducing new characters. The Hollywood Reporter revealed in July 2024 that Rebecca Ferguson from Dune and Barry Keoghan from Saltburn will join the cast.
