The Wayans brothers are back in action!
Marlon Wayans announced on social media that he, Shawn, and Keenen Ivory Wayans are returning to the beloved horror-spoof franchise. This marks their first appearance since Scary Movie 2 nearly two decades ago.
On Tuesday, October 29, Marlon shared the exciting news on Instagram. He began his post with, “Last week I said I had a HUGE ANNOUNCEMENT to make well here it is…” Accompanying his words was a striking image featuring the infamous “Ghostface” killer. This teaser set the stage for their big reveal.
With palpable enthusiasm, Marlon exclaimed, “WE’RE BACK!!!” He expressed how thrilled the brothers are to give fans what they’ve long awaited: a return to the Scary Movie franchise. He concluded, “We’re looking forward to having fun on the big screen again.”
The brothers are collaborating with Rick Alvarez to co-write the new film. Deadline reports that they plan to shoot the movie next year, aiming for a theatrical release afterward. This revival signifies a significant moment for the franchise, which last featured the Wayans in 2001’s sequel. Since then, three more installments have been released, culminating in Scary Movie 5 in 2013.
Keenen, aged 66, directed the first two films, while Marlon, 52, and Shawn, 53, starred in them. Their contributions as writers on the original Scary Movie (2000) and its sequel established the foundation for the franchise’s unique comedic style. Reflecting on their involvement, the brothers shared, “We couldn’t be more excited to be a part of the new Scary Movie and work with each other again.” They fondly remembered the laughter in theaters, hoping to replicate that joy.
The Wayans siblings expressed eagerness to collaborate with Jonathan Glickman and the new Miramax team. They stated, “It’s a double reunion,” highlighting their excitement for this new chapter.
The original Scary Movie gained fame for its clever parody of popular horror films. It notably spoofed hits like Scream, The Blair Witch Project, and The Sixth Sense. Anna Faris and Regina Hall became breakout stars from the series, with Faris portraying the lovable Cindy Campbell.
In April, Paramount announced plans for a reboot of the franchise, sparking curiosity about its direction. Faris, now 47, last appeared in the role of Cindy in Scary Movie 4 (2006). She humorously noted in July that it would take “money” to entice her back into the franchise. Yet, she also expressed a genuine desire to return if it meant reuniting with Hall, who played her character’s best friend, Brenda.
“I would love to work with Regina again. I just love her so much,” Faris said. Her affection for Hall was evident as she added, “We would make each other giggle all day long. Regina Hall would be my answer. And money. But mostly all Regina!”
As the anticipation builds for this return to the franchise, fans can expect the Wayans brothers to deliver the humor and charm that originally captivated audiences. With their rich history in the series and a renewed vision, they aim to create a film that resonates with both old fans and newcomers alike. The laughter is set to return to theaters, promising a nostalgic yet fresh experience for horror-comedy enthusiasts everywhere. Get ready for a wild ride with the Wayans brothers back in the game!
